Spline was founded in 2020 by Alejandro León (CEO), Andrei Linkov, and Theresa Johansson, and is headquartered in San Francisco, California. The company builds a browser-based, collaborative 3D design tool that lets designers and developers create interactive 3D scenes, animations, and web/app experiences without traditional 3D software pipelines. Spline went through Y Combinator and has raised roughly $32 million in total funding, including a $15 million seed round led by Gradient Ventures (with participation from Y Combinator, Vercel CEO Guillermo Rauch, and Webflow CEO Vlad Magdalin) and a $10 million Series A led by Third Point Ventures, announced in July 2023. The company has since introduced Spline AI, a set of generative AI features for creating and editing 3D scenes and objects using text and image prompts, extending its no-code 3D design platform into AI-assisted content creation.
