Splice was founded in New York in 2013 by Steve Martocci and Matt Aimonetti and built its business around a subscription sample library, letting producers rent access to a constantly updated catalog of loops, one-shots, and presets instead of buying sound packs outright. The company has raised roughly $164 million, including a 2021 Series D led by Goldman Sachs, and brought on former Adobe and GitHub product leader Kakul Srivastava as CEO in 2022. Create, Splice's AI-powered discovery feature, represents sound mathematically so that sonically compatible samples sit near each other in a learned space - the closer two sounds are, the better they tend to mix. Producers start a "Stack" from any loop, and Create surfaces matching samples across categories like pads, bass, brass, and vocals to build on top of it; a mobile update added the ability to record an original vocal or melody idea and have Create match samples to it directly. Splice says users have built more than 28 million Stacks since Create launched, and the company has positioned itself publicly around responsible AI use, co-signing music-industry AI principles alongside Universal Music and Roland.
