Toronto legal-tech company whose Spellbook plugin drafts, reviews, and redlines contracts directly inside Microsoft Word.

Spellbook began life in 2018 as Rally, a document-automation startup founded in St. John's, Newfoundland by Scott Stevenson, Daniel Di Maria and Matt Mayers. The team rebuilt the product around large language models and rebranded the company to Spellbook in 2023, positioning it as an AI copilot for transactional lawyers and in-house legal teams working inside Microsoft Word rather than a standalone browser tool. The company has raised roughly $85 million across seed, Series A and a $50 million Series B closed in October 2025 led by Keith Rabois of Khosla Ventures with Threshold Ventures and existing backers Inovia Capital and Moxxie Ventures, plus $40 million in debt financing from RBCx. Spellbook now says it serves more than 4,000 in-house teams and law firms across 80-plus countries, including Dropbox, eBay, ASICS and Fender, and has processed over 10 million contracts.
