Sourcegraph was founded in 2013 in San Francisco by Stanford graduates Quinn Slack and Beyang Liu, initially building a universal code search and intelligence platform for enterprise engineering teams. The all-remote company has raised a total of roughly $351M, including a $125M Series D led by Andreessen Horowitz in July 2021 that valued the company at $2.6 billion; other investors include Sequoia Capital, Craft Ventures, and Redpoint Ventures. Sourcegraph built Cody, an AI coding assistant that pulls context from local and remote codebases via Sourcegraph's search API and integrates with GitHub, GitLab, VS Code, and JetBrains IDEs. In 2025 Sourcegraph discontinued Cody's free, Pro, and Enterprise Starter tiers, retaining only Cody Enterprise for existing customers. In December 2025, Sourcegraph spun off its frontier AI coding-agent product, Amp, into an independent company, Amp Inc., led by co-founders Quinn Slack and Beyang Liu. Dan Adler, a longtime Sourcegraph employee who had served as CFO, became CEO of the remaining Sourcegraph (code-search/Cody) business.
