Cloud data platform that separates storage from compute, now layering AI agents and text-to-SQL directly onto the warehouse.

Snowflake started in 2012 as an attempt to fix a problem the founders had lived with at Oracle: data warehouses that couldn't scale storage and compute independently or handle the messy mix of structured and semi-structured data showing up in modern pipelines. Benoit Dageville, Thierry Cruanes, and Marcin Zukowski built the platform around a multi-cluster, shared-data architecture that runs natively on AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud, and it went public in 2020 in what was then the largest software IPO on record. The company has since pushed well beyond plain SQL warehousing. Snowpark lets teams write Python, Java, and Scala against warehouse data, and the Cortex AI layer adds hosted LLM functions, a search service, and Cortex Analyst, a natural-language interface that turns business questions into governed SQL without exporting data to a separate tool. Sridhar Ramaswamy, who joined via Snowflake's 2023 acquisition of his search startup Neeva, took over as CEO in 2024 and has centered the roadmap on making the warehouse itself the place where AI agents query enterprise data.
