Smartling was founded in 2009 by Jack Welde and Andrey Akselrod in New York City to replace spreadsheet-and-email translation handoffs with a cloud platform that connects directly to a company's content sources. The Translation Management System pulls strings from CMSs, code repositories, and design tools, routes them through machine translation and translation memory, and hands off to human linguists where needed, with visual context and approval workflows layered on top. Under CEO Bryan Murphy, who took over in 2022 while founder Jack Welde stayed on as President, Smartling has pushed further into generative AI. Its AI Hub evaluates dozens of machine translation engines and large language models on an ongoing basis and automatically routes content to whichever performs best for a given language pair and content type, with human review reserved for regulated or brand-sensitive copy. Smartling sells mainly to enterprise marketing, product, and legal teams in e-commerce, SaaS, and regulated industries, competing most directly with Lokalise, Phrase, and RWS in the translation management category.
