scite was founded in 2018 by Josh Nicholson and Yuri Lazebnik around a simple but under-served idea: a citation count tells you a paper was cited, not whether later research agrees with it. scite's Smart Citations classify each citation as supporting, contrasting, or merely mentioning the original claim, using an NLP model trained on citation-context sentences pulled from full-text articles, and surfaces that breakdown on a per-paper Report Page alongside the citing sentences themselves. Research Solutions (Nasdaq: RSSS) acquired scite in November 2023 and has continued building on the citation index, adding an AI Assistant that turns a natural-language question into a search over scite's database, plus a Reference Check feature that flags citations in a manuscript that may be contested or retracted. The company reports its index covers well over a billion citation statements and is used by researchers, university libraries, and publishers vetting manuscripts before submission.
