SciSpace, formerly known as Typeset, was founded in the Bay Area by Saikiran Chandha and Shanu Kumar to help academics get through the unglamorous parts of research faster: finding relevant papers, understanding dense methodology sections, and formatting manuscripts for a specific journal. Its Copilot chat feature lets users highlight a passage inside a PDF and ask for a plain-language explanation or ask follow-up questions grounded in that specific document, while its Literature Review tool runs a semantic search across a topic and returns a comparison matrix of methods, findings, and datasets across the top results. The company has since layered on an AI writer, a citation generator, an AI-text detector aimed at catching LLM-written submissions, and access to a large library of journal formatting templates for one-click manuscript reformatting. It's used heavily by graduate students and academic labs rather than enterprise R&D teams, and its Teams feature added shared libraries and real-time co-writing for lab groups working through the same literature base.
