Runway AI, Inc. was founded in 2018 in New York City by Cristóbal Valenzuela, Anastasis Germanidis, and Alejandro Matamala Ortiz, who met at NYU Tisch School of the Arts' ITP program. The company builds proprietary generative video models (the Gen-1, Gen-2, Gen-3 and Gen-4 series) and creative tools used in filmmaking, advertising, VFX, and post-production, and has increasingly positioned itself as building 'world models' for general-purpose AI simulation rather than just a video-editing company. Runway has raised roughly $860M+ across multiple rounds. In April 2025 it closed a $308M round led by General Atlantic (with Nvidia, SoftBank, Fidelity Management & Research, and Baillie Gifford) at a $3–3.3B valuation. In February 2026 it closed a $315M Series E, again led by General Atlantic with participation from Nvidia, Adobe Ventures, AMD Ventures, Fidelity, and Felicis Ventures, valuing the company at $5.3B. Cristóbal Valenzuela serves as CEO, with Anastasis Germanidis having moved from CTO into a co-CEO role, and Alejandro Matamala Ortiz serving as Chief Design/Innovation Officer. The company is headquartered in New York City.
