Quizlet was built in 2005 by then-teenager Andrew Sutherland to help himself memorize a French vocabulary list, and grew through word of mouth among students before becoming one of the most-used study apps in US classrooms. Sutherland stepped back from day-to-day leadership in 2020; Matt Glotzbach, a former Google and YouTube executive, has served as CEO since 2016 and led the company's shift toward AI-generated study content. Quizlet is backed by investors including General Atlantic, Union Square Ventures, and Icon Ventures, with its most recent disclosed round a $30 million Series C in 2020. The platform's core product remains user-generated flashcard sets, but it now wraps that library in AI features: Magic Notes converts pasted text or PDFs into flashcards and summaries, and its Learn and Test modes use adaptive AI to explain why an answer is right or wrong rather than just marking it correct. Quizlet briefly ran Q-Chat, one of the first AI tutors built on OpenAI's API, from 2023 until it was retired in 2025 in favor of folding conversational AI into existing study modes.
