Portkey runs as the traffic layer between an application and whichever LLMs it calls, giving teams a single API to reach more than 1,600 models while adding caching, retries, and automatic fallbacks. On top of the gateway it layers observability dashboards, prompt management, and governance controls like role-based access and spend limits, aimed at engineering teams that need to show security and finance that AI usage is under control. Rohit Agarwal and Ayush Garg, former colleagues at Pepper Content, founded Portkey in San Francisco in January 2023. The company raised a seed round backed by Lightspeed before closing a $15 million Series A led by Elevation Capital, growing to serve production AI teams that needed governance layered on top of raw model access. Palo Alto Networks completed its acquisition of Portkey in mid-2026, folding the gateway and guardrails technology into its broader push into AI security products. The Portkey product continues operating under its own brand post-acquisition.
