Perplexity AI was founded in August 2022 in San Francisco by Aravind Srinivas, Denis Yarats, Johnny Ho and Andy Konwinski, several of whom previously worked at OpenAI, Meta AI and Databricks. The company's core product is an AI-powered "answer engine" that synthesizes real-time web search results into cited, conversational answers, positioning it as a challenger to traditional search engines; it has since expanded into an agentic AI browser called Comet. Perplexity has raised more than $1.7 billion from investors including IVP, NEA, SoftBank, NVIDIA and Jeff Bezos, reaching a valuation of roughly $22.6 billion as of January 2026. Led by CEO Aravind Srinivas, Perplexity had grown to roughly 1,400 employees by mid-2026 and continues to compete with Google, OpenAI and Microsoft in AI-assisted search and browsing.
