Palantir was founded in 2003 in Palo Alto by Peter Thiel, Alex Karp, Stephen Cohen, Joe Lonsdale and Nathan Gettings, with early funding tied to In-Q-Tel, the CIA's venture arm. Its first product, Gotham, was built for counterterrorism and intelligence analysis and remains the backbone of its defense and law-enforcement business, joining disparate data sources into a single operational picture for military and government customers. The company later built Foundry, a commercial version of the same data-integration approach aimed at manufacturers, banks, airlines and healthcare systems, and went public via direct listing in 2020. In 2023, as large language models went mainstream, Palantir launched AIP (Artificial Intelligence Platform), layering LLM-driven agents and chat interfaces on top of its existing data ontology, and began selling it through short, hands-on "AIP bootcamps" where its own engineers build a working prototype with a prospective customer in days rather than months. Palantir moved its headquarters from Palo Alto to Denver in 2020, then again to Miami-area Aventura, Florida, in February 2026. Its stock and revenue have grown sharply alongside expanded U.S. defense and allied-government contracts, even as the company continues to draw criticism over its work with military, immigration and policing agencies.
