Open WebUI was created by Timothy Jaeryang Baek, who launched it in October 2023 as "Ollama WebUI" before renaming it Open WebUI in January 2024 to reflect broader support for LLM backends beyond Ollama. The project provides a self-hosted, extensible web interface for interacting with large language models running locally or via cloud APIs, giving users a private, feature-rich chat UI similar to ChatGPT that they fully control. It has grown into one of the most popular open-source AI interface projects, with over 128,000 GitHub stars and a community exceeding 355,000 members as of early 2026. Open WebUI has operated as a small, community-driven project rather than a venture-funded startup, supported in part by accelerator grants from programs including Mozilla Builders and GitHub Accelerator.
