ON1 was founded in 2005 in the Portland, Oregon area by Craig Keudell, who started the company, then called onOne Software, by acquiring existing Photoshop plug-ins from Extensis and LizardTech, including Genuine Fractals and Mask Pro. Keudell has said the goal from the start was software built around how photographers actually think, rather than tools adapted from other creative disciplines. The company has grown without venture capital, remaining privately held and self-funded, and today employs roughly 25 people out of its office near Tigard, Oregon. ON1's flagship product, ON1 Photo RAW, combines photo organization, RAW processing, masking, and effects into one application, used by more than 250,000 photographers according to the company. Recent versions have added AI-driven features including NoNoise AI for noise reduction, Resize AI for upscaling, and automatic subject, sky, and background masking. ON1 sells Photo RAW as either a one-time license or an annual subscription, positioning it as a lower-cost, no-forced-subscription alternative to Adobe Lightroom.
