MiniMax was founded in December 2021 in Shanghai by Yan Junjie, a former SenseTime researcher, along with other computer-vision researchers. The company develops large multimodal foundation models spanning text, image, video, and audio. Its consumer-facing products include the AI companion apps Talkie and Xingye, and Hailuo AI, a platform launched in 2024 for text, video, and music generation; Hailuo's video-01 text-to-video model launched in September 2024. MiniMax has been noted by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang as a standout AI startup. MiniMax raised roughly $1.15 billion in total funding from investors including Alibaba, Tencent, MiHoYo, and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, including a $600 million round led by Alibaba in March 2024. The company completed an IPO on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in January 2026, raising about $618 million and making founder Yan Junjie a billionaire.
