Microsoft's research organization; its AI Frontiers Lab created AutoGen, an open-source framework for multi-agent AI systems.

Microsoft Research was established in 1991 on Microsoft's Redmond campus by Richard Rashid, Bill Gates, and Nathan Myhrvold, with a mandate to advance state-of-the-art computing through fundamental and applied research. AutoGen is an open-source framework built by Microsoft Research's AI Frontiers Lab for creating and orchestrating multi-agent AI systems, enabling multiple LLM-based agents to collaborate through structured conversational workflows. It has become widely used in the open-source agentic AI ecosystem, and a rebuilt AutoGen 0.4 was released to improve modularity and robustness.
