Microsoft is an American technology corporation and OpenAI's largest strategic partner, integrating AI via Copilot across its product suite.

Microsoft was founded on April 4, 1975 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, by Bill Gates and Paul Allen, and is now headquartered in Redmond, Washington. It grew into one of the world's largest technology companies through Windows, Office and enterprise software before pivoting heavily toward cloud computing under CEO Satya Nadella, who took over in 2014. Microsoft has been OpenAI's largest strategic investor and cloud partner since 2019, embedding OpenAI's models across its Copilot products in Windows, Microsoft 365, GitHub and Azure AI services. It also operates its own Microsoft AI consumer division, led by Mustafa Suleyman, developing in-house models alongside third-party ones. Publicly traded on the Nasdaq (MSFT), Microsoft is one of the world's most valuable companies by market capitalization, with fiscal 2025 revenue exceeding $245 billion and roughly 228,000 employees, though it has continued periodic layoffs, including cuts announced in July 2026. Under Nadella, Microsoft has restructured its senior leadership around a small governance group and dedicated AI engineering teams as it races to integrate generative AI across its entire product portfolio.
