Mem Labs was founded in 2019 by co-CEOs Kevin Moody and Dennis Xu, who set out to build a notes tool that didn't force people to invent their own filing systems. The company is based in Los Altos Hills, California, and went through Y Combinator before raising a $23.5 million round in November 2022 led by the OpenAI Startup Fund, with participation from Andreessen Horowitz, Neo, and Firestreak Ventures, at a reported valuation near $110 million. Mem's core idea is that notes shouldn't require manual organizing: every entry is a standalone "mem" that the product tags, links, and surfaces automatically using AI, rather than relying on folders or wikis a person has to maintain. The company later layered on an AI assistant, called Mem X, that reads what a user writes and pulls up related past notes, meetings, and documents in a live sidebar. Mem has stayed a small, product-led team relative to its funding, iterating on the AI-organization pitch as competitors like Notion and Tana added their own AI layers. It positions itself less as a wiki builder and more as a personal thought partner that remembers things so the user doesn't have to.
