Mapbox says it began as a small team building mapping tools for international development work with partners including the United Nations, World Bank, USAID, and Doctors Without Borders. In March 2021, Peter Sirota became CEO, while Eric Gundersen transitioned to chair of the board and chief strategy officer. In September 2023, Mapbox completed a $280 million Series E funding round led by SoftBank. The company currently positions its platform as location infrastructure for AI applications, autonomous agents, and developer tools, using sensor data, imagery, telemetry, and user feedback to support maps, navigation, search, and geospatial context.
