Luma AI was founded in 2021 in Palo Alto, California, by Amit Jain, Alex Yu, and Alberto Taiuti, building on Yu's research in neural radiance fields (NeRF) for 3D scene reconstruction. The company initially offered mobile apps for capturing photorealistic 3D scenes, then expanded into generative video with its Dream Machine text-to-video and image-to-video model, and later moved toward broader multimodal foundation model research. Luma AI raised a $900 million Series C round in November 2025 led by Saudi Arabia's HUMAIN, valuing the company at more than $4 billion; total funding raised across all rounds exceeds $1 billion. Amit Jain serves as CEO, with Jiaming Song, formerly of Nvidia, leading research as Chief Scientist. The company had grown to a few hundred employees as of 2026.
