MIT CSAIL spin-out building compact, efficient "Liquid Foundation Models" designed to run natively on edge and on-device hardware.

Liquid AI is a foundation model company headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, incorporated in March 2023 by MIT CSAIL researchers Ramin Hasani, Mathias Lechner, Alexander Amini, and Daniela Rus, who previously developed "liquid neural network" architectures. Hasani serves as CEO, and the company positions itself as an efficiency-first alternative to large, GPU-hungry foundation model providers. Liquid AI's Liquid Foundation Models (LFM) are compact, non-transformer-based models optimized for speed, memory efficiency, and deployment directly on phones, laptops, cars, wearables, and other edge devices rather than only in the cloud. The company raised a $250 million Series A in 2024, reaching a reported $2.4 billion valuation, with investors including AMD Ventures, Samsung Next, and Capgemini.
