Limbic was founded in London in 2017 by Dr. Ross Harper, a computational neuroscientist, and Sebastiaan de Vries, and has focused since the start on the clinical, provider-facing side of AI mental health rather than a direct-to-consumer chatbot. Its flagship product, Limbic Access, is an AI intake assistant that patients interact with when self-referring into NHS Talking Therapies services; it asks clinical screening questions, flags risk, and pre-populates the assessment a human clinician would otherwise spend time gathering. Limbic Access became the first mental health chatbot of its kind to receive Class IIa UKCA medical device certification in the UK, and the company reports it now supports intake for a large share of NHS Talking Therapies services, having processed clinical assessments for several hundred thousand patients. A newer product, Limbic Care, extends the approach into ongoing patient support and clinician-facing tools like ambient note-taking during sessions. The company raised a $14 million Series A led by Khosla Ventures to expand beyond the UK into US healthcare systems, and has published outcomes research in venues including Nature Medicine on how AI-assisted triage changes who ends up accessing NHS mental health services.
