Builds Letta, an open-source framework and platform for creating AI agents with persistent, self-editing memory, evolved from the MemGPT research project.
Letta Inc. was founded by Charles Packer and Sarah Wooders, PhD researchers at UC Berkeley's Sky Computing Lab who authored the 2023 MemGPT research paper introducing self-editing memory for large language models. The company rebranded from MemGPT to Letta and came out of stealth in September 2024. Letta builds an open-source framework and platform for creating stateful AI agents with persistent memory, allowing agents to store, retrieve, and edit their own context over time rather than losing information between sessions. The company's tools are used by developers building long-running AI agents and assistants. In September 2024, Letta raised a $10 million seed round led by Felicis Ventures, with participation from Sunflower Capital and Essence VC, at a reported $70 million post-money valuation. Angel investors included Jeff Dean, Clem Delangue, and Robert Nishihara.
