Kittl was founded in Berlin in 2020 by Nicolas Heymann and Tobias Saul, initially under the name Heritage Type before rebranding to Kittl following a 2021 seed round. Saul, a lettering artist and type designer who has worked with clients including Ogilvy and BBDO, shaped the product's early focus on typography, vintage aesthetics, and print-ready output rather than the social-media templates that define Canva. The company has raised roughly $48 million, including an $11.6 million Series A led by Left Lane Capital and a $36 million Series B led by IVP in 2024, and counts Warner Bros., Netflix, and Penguin Random House among its customers. Kittl has layered generative AI tools — an image generator, a vector generator, and a video generator — onto its existing vector editor and 10,000-plus template library, positioning itself as a design tool for people who want more typographic and print control than Canva offers without the full complexity of Adobe Illustrator.
