Kilo

Open-source, model-agnostic coding agent for VS Code, JetBrains, and the CLI, acquired by Anaconda in July 2026 after rapid growth.

Kilo Code launched in 2025, forked from the open-source agent Roo Code (itself a fork of Cline), under the banner of letting developers pick from more than 500 AI models rather than being locked into one vendor's coding assistant. Jan Paul Posma, previously known for leading the Vesuvius Challenge papyrus-decoding project, served as founding CEO and assembled a ten-person team within its first week; he stepped back in September 2025 and handed the role to Scott Breitenother, who had built and sold the data consultancy Brooklyn Data. GitLab co-founder Sid Sijbrandij joined as co-founder and executive chair after stepping down as GitLab's CEO. The project grew fast: more than 3 million developers across its extensions and CLI, roughly 6 trillion tokens processed monthly, and an $8 million seed round in December 2025 from Cota Capital, General Catalyst, Breakers, Quiet Capital, and Tokyo Black. On July 15, 2026, data-science platform Anaconda announced it had acquired Kilo, folding the open-source agentic coding tool into its enterprise AI development stack; Anaconda said existing products, plans, and support would continue unchanged for current users. Kilo operates remote-first with hubs in San Francisco and Amsterdam and around 30-35 employees at the time of the acquisition.
