Khan Academy is a nonprofit educational organization founded in 2008 by Salman (Sal) Khan, headquartered in Mountain View, California. It provides free online courses, lessons, and practice exercises across math, science, and humanities for students worldwide, funded through donations and grants rather than tuition or advertising. In March 2023, Khan Academy launched Khanmigo, an AI-powered tutor for students and teaching assistant for educators, built on OpenAI's GPT-4 model. Khanmigo guides students through problems with Socratic-style questioning rather than giving direct answers, and helps teachers with lesson planning and administrative tasks. Khanmigo's development has been supported by major donors including the Gates Foundation, Google.org, Bank of America, and a $20 million, five-year partnership with Stand Together Trust announced in January 2024. Microsoft provided Azure infrastructure support and partnered with Khan Academy in May 2024 to offer Khanmigo free to all U.S. educators. Per 2025 tax filings, Khan Academy had 337 employees and $117.5 million in revenue.
