JetBrains was founded in 2000 in Prague, Czech Republic, by Russian software engineers Sergey Dmitriev, Valentin Kipyatkov, and Eugene Belyaev. The company builds integrated development environments and developer tools, including IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm, ReSharper, and the Kotlin programming language. JetBrains has remained privately held and self-funded (bootstrapped) throughout its history, without external venture capital investment. It has grown to employ roughly 2,900-3,300 people across offices on multiple continents as of 2025-2026. The company added JetBrains AI Assistant, an AI-powered coding assistant integrated into its IDEs that offers code completion, chat, and code generation. Kirill Skrygan became CEO in February 2024, succeeding longtime CEO Maxim Shafirov; co-founder Sergey Dmitriev continues as President.
