iZotope was founded in 2001 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, by Mark Ethier, Jeremy Todd, and a group of fellow MIT students who combined backgrounds in music and signal processing to build audio-repair and mastering software. The company's early tools, especially the RX audio-restoration suite, became a standard in film and broadcast post-production before it expanded into mixing and mastering for music. Starting with Neutron's Track Assistant in 2018, iZotope built out a line of "Assistant" features across Ozone, Neutron, and Nectar that listen to a track or mix and generate a starting point for EQ, dynamics, and imaging in under a minute, which producers can then tune by hand. The current flagship versions are Ozone 12 for mastering, Neutron 5 for mixing, and Nectar 4 for vocal production, sold individually, in budget Elements tiers, or bundled in the Music Production Suite. iZotope's ownership has changed hands repeatedly in recent years: Francisco Partners bought the company in 2021 and folded it in with Native Instruments, and in mid-2026 iZotope was carved out and acquired by Boris FX, the visual-effects company behind Sapphire and Continuum, while Native Instruments itself went to inMusic. iZotope's product, engineering, and support teams have stayed in place through each transition, and existing licenses and subscriptions continue to work as before.
