Hugging Face was founded in 2016 in New York City by Clement Delangue, Julien Chaumond, and Thomas Wolf, initially building a teen-targeted chatbot app. After open-sourcing the underlying NLP model, the company pivoted to become a hub for the machine learning community, now used by over 10 million users to host and collaborate on models, datasets, and Spaces (apps). Notable milestones include the BigScience Research Workshop (2021) that produced the open multilingual BLOOM model (176B parameters, 2022), a 2023 partnership with AWS, and a $235M Series D in August 2023 led by Salesforce Ventures with participation from Google, Amazon, Nvidia, IBM, Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm, valuing the company at $4.5 billion. In 2025 Hugging Face acquired French humanoid robotics startup Pollen Robotics, expanding into open robotics via its LeRobot platform.
