HeyGen was founded in 2020 by Joshua Xu and Wayne Liang, who met at Tongji University and Carnegie Mellon University. Originally named Movio, the company rebranded to HeyGen and established headquarters in Los Angeles in 2022. Xu previously worked at Snap; Liang was a product designer at Smule and ByteDance. HeyGen's platform generates photorealistic avatars from user photos and video, plus a library of stock avatars and voices, with translation and lip-sync capabilities; it was notably used to translate Argentine President Javier Milei's 2024 World Economic Forum speech. Funding includes early backing from HongShan (Sequoia China) and ZhenFund, a $5.6M round in November 2023 led by Conviction, a $60M Series A in June 2024 led by Benchmark at a $500M valuation, and a reported ~$150M Series B in mid-2025 at a roughly $2B valuation. Revenue grew from $35M ARR in mid-2024 to about $100M ARR by late 2025, with users spanning most of the Fortune 100.
