Greptile started as a different idea entirely: an AI shopping assistant built by three Georgia Tech classmates, Daksh Gupta, Soohoon Choi and Vaishant Kameswaran. After that concept stalled, the team pivoted in 2023 toward a problem they understood firsthand as engineers: pull requests sit unreviewed for hours because reviewers are busy, and most automated linters only catch surface-level issues. Greptile went through Y Combinator's Winter 2024 batch and has grown quickly since, raising a seed round from Initialized Capital followed by a $25 million Series A led by Benchmark. The product works by cloning and indexing a customer's full repository into a code graph rather than reviewing pull requests in isolation, which lets it reference how a changed function is called elsewhere or whether a new dependency conflicts with existing patterns. Engineering teams at Brex, Whoop, Substack, Coinbase and thousands of smaller startups now route pull requests through it before a human ever opens the diff. Greptile is based in San Francisco with a small, engineering-heavy team split across North America and Asia. It continues to ship quickly, with the company noting on its blog that most of its own code is now written with the help of its own reviewer.
