GitLab traces back to a 2011 open-source project started by Dmitriy Zaporozhets, with Sid Sijbrandij joining shortly after to help turn it into a company, incorporated in 2014 and built from the start as an all-remote organization with employees across dozens of countries rather than a central office. GitLab went public on Nasdaq in 2021 and is nominally headquartered in San Francisco, though most of its workforce has never worked from a shared building. Bill Staples became CEO in December 2024, with Sijbrandij moving into the role of executive chair. GitLab Duo, the company's AI product line, layers code suggestions, chat, and test generation onto the existing DevSecOps platform, then goes further with security-specific features like vulnerability explanation and suggested fixes drawing on the same pipeline data GitLab already collects. The Duo Agent Platform, which reached general availability in January 2026, extends this into multi-step agentic work — reviewing merge requests and investigating pipeline failures — billed through a separate GitLab Credits system layered on top of existing Premium and Ultimate subscriptions.
