GitHub was founded in 2008 by Chris Wanstrath, P.J. Hyett, Tom Preston-Werner, and Scott Chacon as a Git-based code hosting and collaboration platform. Microsoft acquired GitHub for $7.5 billion in a deal announced June 2018 and closed October 2018, making it a wholly owned Microsoft subsidiary. GitHub Copilot, launched in 2021 and developed with OpenAI, is an AI coding assistant integrated into GitHub and popular IDEs, offering code completions, chat-based help, and autonomous coding-agent workflows. GitHub has cited more than 20 million Copilot users and over 1 billion repositories and forks on the platform. In August 2025, GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke announced he would step down at the end of 2025 as Microsoft integrated GitHub's leadership into its CoreAI organization; GitHub's leadership team (COO Kyle Daigle, CPO Mario Rodriguez, CTO Vladimir Fedorov) now reports through Microsoft's CoreAI/Developer Division structure.
