Factory was founded in San Francisco in 2023 by Matan Grinberg and Eno Reyes, who set out to move software engineering past line-by-line autocomplete and toward agents that own entire units of work. The company calls its approach "agent-native development": instead of a chat sidebar bolted onto an IDE, Factory built a platform where autonomous agents called Droids handle triage, coding, testing, code review, documentation, and release, coordinating with human engineers rather than waiting on them for every step. Factory closed a $150 million Series C in April 2026 at a $1.5 billion valuation, led by Khosla Ventures with Sequoia Capital, Insight Partners, and other backers joining, pushing the company into unicorn territory roughly three years after founding. It counts NVIDIA, Adobe, EY, Adyen, and Palo Alto Networks among its enterprise customers and says Droids are used daily by hundreds of thousands of developers, with usage-based revenue that the company reports has doubled month over month for extended stretches. The platform supports model-agnostic deployment across SaaS, hybrid, and fully air-gapped environments, a positioning aimed squarely at regulated enterprises like banks and defense contractors that need agentic coding tools without sending code to a third-party cloud.
