Elicit began as a project inside Ought, a nonprofit machine-learning research lab founded in 2017 by Andreas Stuhlmuller. In September 2023, Elicit spun out as an independent public benefit corporation led by co-founders Andreas Stuhlmuller (CEO) and Jungwon Byun (COO), raising a $9 million seed round led by Fifty Years. The platform helps researchers find relevant papers beyond simple keyword matching, summarize findings, and extract structured data from scientific literature. Elicit raised a $22 million Series A in February 2025, co-led by Spark Capital and Footwork, bringing total funding to roughly $31 million.
