Document Crunch was founded around 2019 in Atlanta by construction attorney Josh Levy and Adam Handfinger, both of whom had spent years reviewing construction contracts and litigating disputes and wanted to give field teams, not just lawyers, a way to actually understand what a contract required of them. The company built CrunchAI, a construction-specific AI engine that combines purpose-built natural language models with general-purpose LLMs from providers like OpenAI and Anthropic, tuned specifically to recognize risk-shifting language, indemnification clauses, and compliance obligations in construction contracts and specs. The platform's Construction Contract Checklist and Project Playbook translate dense contract language into plain-English guidance for project managers and site staff, while a chat interface lets in-house counsel and project teams ask questions about a specific contract. Document Crunch won the 2024 AI Breakthrough Award for Best Overall Large Language Model, a category previously won by OpenAI, and says its software cuts contract review time significantly for teams that used to rely entirely on outside counsel. Document Crunch raised a $21.5 million Series B in 2024 backed by Titanium Ventures and Nemetschek Group, bringing its total funding to roughly $37 million, and was acquired by Trimble in 2025.
