deepset was founded in 2018 in Berlin, Germany by Milos Rusic, Malte Pietsch, and Timo Moller. The company created and maintains Haystack, an open-source Python framework (first released in November 2019) for building retrieval-augmented generation, question-answering, and other production-grade NLP/LLM applications, alongside a commercial Haystack Enterprise Platform and managed cloud offering. deepset raised a $14 million Series A in April 2022 led by GV, followed by a $30 million Series B in August 2023 led by Balderton Capital with participation from GV, System.One, Lunar Ventures, and Harpoon Ventures. The company operates out of Berlin with an additional office in New York.
