DataStax builds database and AI infrastructure -- Astra DB and Langflow -- for real-time and generative AI applications; acquired by IBM in 2025.

DataStax was founded in April 2010 by Jonathan Ellis and Matt Pfeil, who left Rackspace to commercialize Apache Cassandra, the distributed NoSQL database. Originally named Riptano, the company later renamed to DataStax and relocated its headquarters to Santa Clara, California, building products including DataStax Enterprise, Astra DB (a managed Cassandra-based database), and Langflow, an open-source visual builder for AI/LLM workflows. Over its lifetime DataStax raised more than $400 million in venture funding across multiple rounds, including a $106 million Series E in 2014, and was later led by CEO Chet Kapoor. In February 2025, IBM announced it would acquire DataStax; the acquisition closed in May 2025. DataStax's products, including Astra DB and Langflow, now operate as part of IBM's data and AI portfolio, and datastax.com now redirects to an IBM product page.
