DataProphet was founded in Cape Town in 2014 by Daniel Schwartzkopff and Frans Cronje, building AI specifically for manufacturing process optimization rather than the more common enterprise-software or consumer-app path most South African startups take. The premise was that factory floors generate enormous amounts of sensor and process data that mostly goes unused, and that machine learning could turn that data into specific, actionable adjustments to control parameters rather than just dashboards. Its flagship product, PRESCRIBE, is built as prescriptive rather than purely predictive — it doesn't just flag that a defect rate is rising, it recommends the specific parameter changes to bring it back down. Early backing came from Knife Capital's Section 12J vehicle in 2018, followed by a $6 million Series A in 2020 that included South Africa's Industrial Development Corporation and Norican Group, then a further $10 million Series A extension in 2022 to scale the platform internationally. DataProphet's roughly 50-person team works primarily with automotive, foundry, semiconductor and rubber manufacturers, a client base that has produced some of the more concrete published results in industrial AI — clients report double-digit percentage reductions in scrap and non-quality costs, with some sites reporting reductions of 40 percent or more.
