Crimson Interactive was founded in 2005 by Sharad Mittal in Mumbai and grew its reputation through Enago, an author-services brand offering manuscript editing and translation to researchers publishing in English-language journals. Over roughly two decades the company expanded from a single editing service into a group covering translation, editing, and now AI writing software, and it later acquired The Charlesworth Group to extend its reach into China's academic publishing market. Trinka, launched as Crimson AI's flagship product, was purpose-built for the kind of stilted, over-formal or grammatically awkward English that trips up non-native academic writers — a gap Grammarly's more general consumer focus doesn't fully address. The company describes Trinka as built by linguists, editors, and NLP researchers rather than a generic writing-app team, reflecting its roots in the editing business rather than a startup pivot into education. Crimson Interactive today employs several hundred people across editing, engineering, and customer-facing roles, with Mittal continuing to lead the company as founder and CEO.
