Contextual AI is an artificial intelligence company headquartered in Mountain View, California, founded in 2023 by Douwe Kiela and Amanpreet Singh, both former Facebook AI Research (FAIR) and Hugging Face researchers. Kiela is widely credited as one of the original inventors of retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) during his time at FAIR, and serves as the company's CEO. Contextual AI's platform, which it calls RAG 2.0, jointly optimizes the retriever and language model as a single end-to-end system rather than combining off-the-shelf components, aiming for higher factual accuracy and lower compute cost than long-context-only approaches. Its Grounded Language Model (GLM) is built specifically to minimize hallucinations for enterprise use cases in regulated industries such as banking and healthcare. The company raised an $80 million Series A in August 2024 led by Greycroft, with investors including Bain Capital Ventures, Nvidia, and Snowflake Ventures.
