An all-in-one doc that mixes writing pages with spreadsheet-style tables and built-in automations, aimed at replacing a scattered stack of Docs, Sheets, and trackers.

Coda was founded in 2014 by Shishir Mehrotra, a former YouTube and Microsoft executive, on the premise that most teams end up stitching together a document, a spreadsheet, and a handful of separate apps to run a single process. Coda's docs combine narrative writing with tables that function as real databases, formulas that reference other tables, and 'Packs' that pull in live data from tools like Slack, Jira, and Salesforce, so a single doc can serve as a wiki, a project tracker, and a lightweight app at once. The company raised roughly $240 million, reaching a peak valuation near $1.4 billion in 2021 with investors including Kleiner Perkins and Greylock. Rather than continuing as an independent company, Coda agreed to be acquired by Grammarly, announced in December 2024, with Mehrotra taking over as CEO of the combined company — a deal framed around building AI-native productivity software rather than shutting Coda down. Coda AI, layered throughout the product as a chat panel, a table-filling assistant, and an AI reviewer that leaves comments, has since been extended into Coda Brain, a permissions-aware assistant meant to answer questions grounded in a company's own docs rather than the open web.
