Cline develops an open-source AI coding agent that runs autonomously inside IDEs like VS Code and JetBrains to plan, write, and execute code.
Cline began in mid-2024 as a side project by Saoud Rizwan for an Anthropic "Build with Claude" hackathon and grew into a widely used open-source AI coding agent. Rizwan, who founded and leads the company as CEO, relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area to build the startup. In November 2024 Cline raised a $5 million seed round, and in July 2025 it announced a Series A round, bringing combined seed and Series A funding to $32 million from investors including Emergence Capital and Pace Capital, with participation from 1984 Ventures, Essence VC, and angels such as Logan Kilpatrick and Addy Osmani. Cline has been installed by roughly 2.7 million developers and is used inside enterprises including Samsung and SAP, distinguishing itself from closed competitors through unobfuscated access to underlying models, open pricing, and support for local execution.
