Citrine Informatics was founded in 2013 by Bryce Meredig, Kyle Michel, and Greg Mulholland, three Stanford graduates who set out to bring the kind of data infrastructure common in software engineering to materials science, a field still largely run on physical trial-and-error. The company is headquartered in Redwood City, California. The Citrine Platform combines a materials-specific data infrastructure with machine learning models that predict how formulation and process changes affect material properties, letting R&D teams simulate experiments before running them in a lab. Customers span batteries, aerospace, chemicals, and consumer packaged goods, including manufacturers such as Panasonic, Michelin, and LANXESS; the company says it was the first to bring machine learning specifically to materials and chemicals R&D, and it has picked up recognition including a 2018 AI Breakthrough Award and inclusion in the Cleantech 100 in 2020 and 2021. Citrine has raised more than $80 million, including a Series C round in January 2023, from investors including Innovation Endeavors and Prelude Ventures. The company employs roughly 70 people, with Greg Mulholland serving as CEO and Bryce Meredig as Chief Science Officer.
