Chroma was founded in April 2022 by Anton Troynikov and Jeff Huber and is headquartered in San Francisco, California. The company develops Chroma (ChromaDB), an open-source embedding database that lets developers store, index, and query vector embeddings alongside metadata and documents for building LLM-powered applications. In April 2023, Chroma raised an $18 million seed round led by Quiet Capital, bringing total funding to roughly $20.5 million. The open-source project has become one of the most widely adopted vector databases in the AI developer ecosystem and is commonly used in retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines. Chroma also offers a hosted cloud version alongside its open-source core. As of early 2026 the company employed around 100 people.
