Maker of open-source command-line tools including Crush, a terminal-native AI coding agent, and Mods, an AI pipe for shell scripts.

Charm was founded in 2019 by Christian Rocha and Toby Padilla with a simple mission stated on their own site: make the command line glamorous. The company built a following well before AI coding agents existed, through libraries like Bubble Tea and Glamour that developers use to build good-looking terminal interfaces, and applications like Glow and Gum built on top of them. That open-source reputation is a big part of why, when the team behind a separate terminal AI agent project called OpenCode joined Charm in mid-2025, the resulting product (rebranded as Crush) found an audience quickly among developers who already trusted Charm's other tools. Charm raised a $6 million Series A in late 2023 led by Gradient, Google's AI-focused venture fund, on top of roughly $4 million in earlier angel and seed funding, bringing total funding to around $10 million. The company runs on a mixed model: its libraries and most applications, including Crush, are open source and free, while an Enterprise offering provides commercial terms and support for companies embedding Charm's tools into their own products. Charm is a small team based in San Francisco, and its tools collectively appear in tens of thousands of applications across the open-source ecosystem.
