Capacities was founded in 2022 by Steffen Bleher and Michael von Hohnhorst, who met studying electrical engineering and computer science in Germany and built the product after being unsatisfied with existing note apps for organizing research and ideas. The company is based in Stuttgart, Germany, and has remained founder-owned, funding its growth through subscription revenue rather than venture capital, with some early support from Media Lab Bayern. The product's distinguishing idea is that every piece of content — a note, a person, a book, a project — is a typed "object" with its own properties, rather than a generic page or a file in a folder. Objects of the same type automatically inherit shared fields and show up in structured collections, and backlinks between objects surface contextually rather than requiring manual linking discipline. Capacities has built a following among people who tried Notion, Obsidian, or Roam Research and wanted a system with more built-in structure without having to configure a database from scratch, and it has since layered in an AI assistant for search, summarization, and content generation directly inside notes.
