Canva was founded on January 1, 2013 in Perth, Australia, by Melanie Perkins, Cliff Obrecht, and Cameron Adams, who joined as a third co-founder in 2012. The company later relocated its headquarters to Sydney (Surry Hills) as it scaled internationally. Canva raised a series of venture rounds, reaching unicorn status by 2018 and a roughly $40 billion valuation after a $200 million raise in September 2021. The valuation was cut to about $26 billion in 2022 before recovering; an August 2025 employee share sale valued the company at approximately $42 billion. As of mid-2026 Canva remains a private company, though it has taken IPO-readiness steps, including hiring former Zoom CFO Kelly Steckelberg in late 2024, with some reports suggesting a possible IPO in 2026 or 2027.
