Candor Technology

Patented AI underwriting engine that automates conditional loan approval decisions for mortgage lenders.

Candor Technology

Candor Technology was founded in 2018 by Tom Showalter, a former NASA scientist who later worked in mortgage decision science, along with co-founder Mark Hinshaw, to tackle a persistent bottleneck in home lending: underwriting decisions that still depended on a manual review of thousands of data points across income, assets, and credit for every loan file. The company's Loan Engineering System, built on its patented CogniTech technology, is designed to replicate the reasoning of an experienced underwriter, analyzing thousands of data points per file against investor guidelines to issue hands-off conditional approvals, with a human underwriter stepping in only for exceptions. Candor says its system has processed well over a million fully automated underwrites for banks, credit unions, and independent mortgage bankers, including lenders such as Churchill Mortgage, without a reported repurchase on those loans. Candor is headquartered in Alpharetta, Georgia, and raised a $12.5 million Series A in 2023 led by Arthur Ventures, bringing its total disclosed funding to roughly $14 million.
